Book Review–Ghost Hand by Ripley Patton

I don’t like to give out spoilers in a review so this is just a basic review about my opinions.  It does have a basic storyline in the first paragraph though.

Ghost Hand (The PSS Chronicles, #1)

Ghost Hand (the PSS Chronicles #1) by Ripley Patton

In a world where a small amount of people are born with a birth defect called PSS, where people are born with energy as body parts, Olivia is born with energy as a hand and while everything seems normal most of her life, high school is a different story.  Her hand starts to do things on its own and reaching into people and pulling things out but what makes matters worse, she finds out she’s being hunted by a group of people trying to harness the energy in these PSS body parts.

This was a good book and I added the 2nd one to my Amazon wish list.  I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads.  I liked it because it was different and while I like a lot of books with the same genre (zombies, vampires, ect.) it’s always great to get something different.  Olivia is a great character as while she is a little dark and has lots of attitude, she also cares and has a heart about those around her.  It’s your basic good versus evil when she joins with a group trying to protect those with PSS.

I definitely recommend it if you like the genre.

Christmas Eve memories

One of my most favorite Christmas memories was from when I was a kid.  I couldn’t tell you what year it was or if my memory even serves me correctly.  But it started on Christmas Eve and it started with a lot of snow.  It kept falling, and falling and as night time rolled around it was apparent that we were in the process of getting snowed in.  Our Christmas tradition was for the whole family to get together for lunch on Christmas day.  This particular year, we were supposed to meet at my grandparents house but the snow was saying otherwise.

After a few phone calls, it was decided we were going to go to my grandparents house tonight so we could all be together at Christmas.  So my uncle, who had a 4x4 truck started hitting all the families houses that were local and picking us up.  I remember packing all the gifts in black trash bags and throwing them in the bed of the truck and piling in and heading to their house.  I don’t remember specifics of that Christmas, but I do remember loving that we woke up with all the family there.  Cousins, Aunts, Uncles and of course, my grandparents.

download (1)

My brother and I, not sure if this was that year or not but it may be.  I believe that is our letter with a plate of cookies for Santa.

Cheri asked me if I was looking forward to Christmas tomorrow and I am.  Not because of the gifts or even the food, but because I love my family and I love hanging out with them.  Even if we just sit and chat and do nothing, I always enjoy the time.  I don’t have friends because my family are my friends.  I hang out with them more than anybody.  Some people think that’s pathetic, but what do I need friends for when I can hang out with my family.  Isn’t that what the holidays is all about, being with the ones you love.  My wife, my kids and my family will all be there.  That’s all I need.

I wish everyone out there reading this a Merry Christmas and I hope you get what you wish for, and by that, I mean, I hope you get to be with the ones you love.

Music Monday #14

zzz-musicmondays

Welcome to the next edition of Music Mondays.  It’s pretty basic, I take a playlist and put it on random, and post what comes up.

  • Playlist – “Anything & Everything”
  • Description – Anything from Christian to Rock, Rap to Country, Classical to 80’s.  It goes from the 1960’s to current.  Pretty much anything and everything that I like.
  • Number of songs on the playlist – 1,687 songs (up 17 songs from last post)

  1. This Kiss (Faith Hill)
  2. Bring Me To Life (Evanescence)
  3. Call Me Maybe (Carly Rae Jepsen)
  4. Back in Black (AC/DC*)
  5. Right Here Waiting (Richard Marx)
  6. Father Figure (George Michael)
  7. I Miss The Way (Michael W. Smith)
  8. Bodies (Drowning Pool)
  9. We Are The Champions (Queen)
  10. Here I Am (Russ Taff)
  11. This Life (Dominick Hauser)
  12. I Run To You (Lady Antebellum)
  13. I Would Die 4 U (Prince)
  14. Jumper (Third Eye Blind)
  15. Wild, Wild West (Will Smith)
  16. Best of You (Foo Fighters)
  17. Some Beach (Blake Shelton)
  18. Not By Sight (Petra)
  19. Cherry Pie (Warrant)
  20. Lightning Crashes (Live)

That’s a pretty good list there.  Quite a few newer songs with a few 80’s and Christian thrown in.  The asterisk (*) next to AC/DC is because it is a tribute band.  AC/DC apparently doesn’t let Spotify play their music.  I’ve only run into a few bands that won’t (Garth Brooks, the Beatles) and their has been a couple of others but have since released their songs (the Eagles).  If you don’t recognize This Life by Dominique Hauser is the theme song from Sons of Anarchy.

In this section, I randomly choose an artist from above and show all the songs I have on my playlist.  I used Random.org, put the numbers 1-20 and click random 3 times, the number 8 came up at the top which would be Drowning Pool in accordance to the list above.

Bodies * Tear Away * the Game

I have 3 songs (listed above) because apparently the screen capture I use changed and now I can’t screen cap anything unless it’s in my browser which Spotify isn’t.  I believe Bodies and The Game were both used in WWE which is probably where I first heard them.  I don’t watch it anymore but I did for awhile.

Some quicky movie reviews

A couple quick reviews.  We hit Redbox on Tuesday night and picked up 3 new releases.

We’re the Millers

We had been looking forward to this and it was actually the reason I stopped by Redbox that night.

It was well worth it, it was hilarious.  Not to mention a hot strip dance scene with Jennifer Aniston but even better was the comedy.  Some of it was raunchy humor but I don’t mind that, I am a factory worker.

5/5 stars

2 Guns

This had it’s good parts but it wasn’t quite as good as I was hoping.  I do like the buddy cop movies which this is, more or less.  It had some really funny parts with Denzel and Marky Mark, just not as many as I had thought it would.  The action scenes were pretty good as well so it certainly wasn’t a horrible movie, it was pretty good, just not as good as I had thought it would be.

4/5 stars

Elysium

This was pretty good as far as SciFi standards go.  I enjoyed it, great action and story.  Seeing Matt Damon with his head shaved took some getting used to but no more than seeing the mechanism coming out the back of his head later in the movie.  My wife, who doesn’t generally like SciFi, liked it, so that says something.

4/5 stars

Duck Dynasty Fiasco

I watch Duck Dynasty, I like the show.  I don’t go overboard with it, I have no merchandise, I don’t go around quoting it, but I like it.  It’s one of the many shows my wife and I DVR,  I am also for gay rights, they should have all the rights that us straight people do.  I read the quote that Phil said in GQ, here it is according to the CNN site.

"It seems like, to me, a vagina -- as a man -- would be more desirable than a man's anus. That's just me. I'm just thinking: There's more there! She's got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I'm saying? But hey, sin: It's not logical, my man. It's just not logical," he's quoted as saying.

Asked what, in his mind, is sinful, Robertson replied: "Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men."

As a straight man, the first paragraph makes sense.  To a straight man, a woman’s vagina does look better.  That’s my opinion and his, it doesn’t say I’m anti-gay, it describes my sexual preference.  The second paragraph is his opinion too.  If he thinks homosexual behavior is a sin, more power to him.  Me personally, have never really thought about it.  I’m not gay, nor do I have gay sex, so what do I care if it is a sin or not.

What I don’t understand is why everybody else has to express their opinion on everyone else.  What happened to everyone was entitled to their own opinion?  I think the gay and lesbian community should be allowed to marry, I assume Phil doesn’t.  Who’s to say my opinion is right or his opinion is wrong?  Who’s to say my opinion is wrong and his is right?  Isn’t that what an opinion is?  Why does everyone think that you have to make everybody else think like you?

But what really kills me, I saw this on Facebook earlier today.

Christian Evangelical TEA Party Members's photo.

I see these on pages of people who have come out and said other people are wrong.  People who say other peoples beliefs are wrong.  So I’m supposed to respect your beliefs when a bunch of you don’t respect my beliefs.  I agree with the message here, just not with who is saying it.  These people are the ones claiming everyone else is wrong because the other aren’t Christians or because they are for gay rights.  These are the same people that would have a fit if there was a show that came out in support of gay rights.  They’d be all over it, ban this, ban that.  But now they are going to preach about how we have to respect their beliefs.

For anybody that watches or knows anything about the show Duck Dynasty, are you really surprised to hear that Phil spoke out against it?  He’s a Christian, they pray at the end of every show, I’m not shocked that he’s against gay rights.

You want my personal opinion, Phil can say whatever he wants to say.  I don’t watch the show because I need to know his opinion.  I watch the show for entertainment value, it can be hilarious.  Some of the stupid things they do are so stupid, it’s funny.  I don’t watch it to find his religious beliefs.  This goes for all the people who want to ban the show because he prays at the end of it too.  WHO CARES?  If you don’t like the show, don’t watch it.  You don’t need to create a hate filled Facebook page about it, JUST DON’T WATCH IT!

download

From the http://www.merriam-webster.com/ site.

I’m big on this word, coexist.  If everyone could coexist, this world would be a better place.  I don’t have to like what you do to like you.  Respect those around you if you want respect.  Be nice to me, I’ll be nice to you.

If you don’t want to watch Duck Dynasty anymore, don’t watch it.  Don’t preach to everyone that still does, that they shouldn’t.  Along with coexist, the word tolerance will go a long way.  Just because people think differently than you do, doesn’t make them bad people.  If you have a difference in opinion then someone else then don’t discuss those opinions, it’s really that easy.

While I don’t like some of what Phil said, I’ve heard a crap load more of his opinions on the show that I did like.  I don’t hate the man because he has one opinion that differs than mine.  He’s old school on the show, he believes in hard work.  Here is his quote from being suspended for A&E

"I myself am a product of the 60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together.”

"However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other."

The 2nd paragraph sums it up, with or without God involved, we would all be better off if we loved each other.  It also goes to show you how much this has gotten blown out of proportion.

Written Word Wednesdays #6

Since I’ve been combining my WWW Wednesdays and Stacking the Shelves into one post, I’ve decided to rename the posts to Written Word Wednesdays.

WWW_Wednesdays4

WWW Wednesdays #33

To play along, I’m supposed to answer 3 easy questions.

What are you currently reading?

Ghost Hand (The PSS Chronicles, #1)

Ghost Hand (the PSS Chronicles #1) by Ripley Patton

I’m at the halfway point and I like it.  It’s different and it’s been fairly exciting so far.

What did you recently finish reading?

Dead, but Not for Long

Dead But Not For Long by Matthew Kinney and Lesa Kinney Anders

I gave this 4 stars.  It wasn’t a typical zombie book as the storyline was a little different than most.  It takes place in Lansing and a group of survivors take control of a hospital.  Most books run from hospitals because they are usually the highest concentration of zombies.  This also has a biker gang that helps out and a few docs and nurses trying to keep their patients alive.  Maybe it wasn’t a lot different but I enjoyed it more than most.

Spending the Holidays with People I Want to Punch in the Throat

Spending the Holidays with People I Want to Punch in the Throat by Jen

I bought this after Christmas last year when it went cheaper but I sat on it for a year so I could at least read it when Christmas time was rolling around.  I gave this 4 stars, I read Jen’s blog so I was used to her humor and this has some great holiday stories in it.

Snow Bound

Snow Bound by Blake Crouch

I gave this 4 stars as well.  This wasn’t a supernatural type book but a thriller/mystery like I used to read.  A woman turns up missing and her husband runs with their daughter when he starts to be accused.  Years later, when a FBI agent shows up at his door and claims his innocence, he goes with her to prove it but gets thrown into a thriller trying to find out what happens to his wife.  It was a great read with a twist at the end.

Wick (Wick, #1)

Wick (Wick #1) by Michael Bunker

I gave this 3 stars as it just didn’t hold my attention that well.  It wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t great.  It’s kind of a cold war extended when a man stumbles upon a government facility in the mountains that houses Russian prisoners.  After seeking shelter there, he starts to learn a lot more about this facility and it’s inhabitants.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Binary Cycle: Disruption (Binary Cycle, #1)

Binary Cycle: Disruption by WJ Davies

After inhabiting a planet for 200 years, something is discovered that could very well destroy what’s left of humanity.
