Saturday with Samantha

I took Samantha to her first Michigan game at the Big House.  It was a really great daddy/daughter day.  She said she had a great time and I did as well, minus the actual game that is.  She was pretty amazed at the stadium all filled up with people.  She has been there on fan days before, actually been down on the field a couple of times but to see 103,000 people in the stadium is definitely a different thing.  It would have been 110,000 if the product on the field could perform but that’s another blog post.

We left the house around 11 and stopped by Dollar General to pick her up a charger for her phone.  Cheri had ordered a couple more for them but they hadn’t shown up yet and they were down to 1 between the 2 of them.  After that we headed out.  About an hour into the 2 1/2 hour trip, Samantha finally got her charger open.  It was one of the plastic kind that you can’t really open without a knife or scissors, which we had neither.  She did finally get it open with only a few minor cuts to her fingers.

We stopped at Arby’s on the way up for some lunch and a potty break.  We were making good time (I drive fast) so we ate in and chit chatted.  I don’t really remember a whole lot of the conversation so I think it was just that, chit chat.  We got there with about an hour before game time.  I think she was in awe at all the people hanging out and tailgating.  We got to our seats and sat back and watched the stadium fill up.

She was pretty amazed at the pregame with the band.  If you’ve been to a game, then you know what I’m talking about.  If not, check this out below.

The whole thing is just an awesome sight and is so traditional, that you have to give it respect.  Including the drum major dropping down backwards until his head touches the turf.  I don’t know how long they’ve been doing that but they’ve done it as long as I’ve been going to games.

game

She found the game pretty boring, she was trying to understand it and I was trying to teach her but some things can’t be taught at a live game.  I need a TV where I can pause and rewind to explain things.  She’s at least trying though.

On the way home we had good conversations about what happened with theEx and I, about what I expect from her at school and even about when Cheri and I were dating and some of the decisions I made about her and her brother.  It was a really good chat and I think she understands me more, not that she didn’t before but she’s getting old enough now where I can tell her certain things.

When we finally made it home, she got into her PJ’s and cuddled up next to me on the couch while we all watched some TV.  Like I said, it was a really good daddy/daughter day.

FML w/Links

It’s been a week since I posted, some things have happened.  A lot hasn’t.  I don’t really want to talk about it right now.  Maybe later in the week, I’m sure I can find the time.  Here are some of my negatives.

Michigan football sucks

Chicago White Sox suck

Indianapolis Colts suck

Oh yeah, and I lost my job.

For the first time ever, I’m using these abbreviations that I have grown to hate.

FML

What I clicked on this week.  I read all kinds of blogs and such in my Feedly, but these I found in other places or a link in Feedly.

Journal and this weeks links and viewing

I decided I’d make these a weekly post rather than trying to post it everyday.  As you can see, I kind of took the week off.  Basically, I’ve debated on the whole journal thing.  I don’t mind doing it (almost) everyday, but I can’t really decide whether it needs to be out there on the internet.  I don’t care that it is, I highly doubt anybody reads it other than my wife and mom.  I have a couple of followers that comment occasionally but how often they read, I have no idea.  I do like doing the journal everyday, because when I get caught up, it will eventually go to the My Life blog and be there for my kids when I pass on.  I suppose that’s morbid, but as a child who lost his father at 8 years old, it would be nice if I had known a little more about him other than the few stories I’ve heard from family.  My kids are a little older so they should keep more memories than I have.  My brother was only 5 and he remembers nothing about our father.

So what happened this week, not much in my exciting life.  Monday night, we went to watch my nephew play JV football.  I wasn’t surprised that Samantha went, I was however, that Trevor went.  He doesn’t usually go anywhere, he’d rather hang at home and play video games.  Although, I think he went because we would be at the school and he was hoping we would go to the Book Fair, but even if we did want to go, it apparently isn’t open after school because we tried to go on Wednesday after they got off the bus.  The game ended up being a family affair as my mom and stepdad, brother and grandparents went along with my cousin and their kids who we expected since it was their kid that was playing.  Thursday we took the kids to get jeans since it’s been a tad chilly around here.  Plus they are going camping this weekend and could use them there.  We were able to get Trevor a couple of pairs for $8.50/each at a resale shop.  We couldn’t find anything that would fit Samantha right, so we ended up having to go to Old Navy, which cost $36 so she only got one pair.  They have other pants (sweats, sports pants) they just didn’t have any jeans that fit.  Damn teenagers, always cost you more money.

I was supposed to go to a White Sox game today with a couple of guys I used to work with, that was the whole reason I didn’t go camping with the family.  I contacted one last night to find out if we were still on and apparently, he never bought the tickets.  That would have been nice to know.  The last time we texted, he asked if I wanted to go, that he and the other guy were going, I said yes, he said ok, he’d get the tickets.  I asked how much and he told and I said I’d get it to him today when we got together.  That was it, no text saying he didn’t get them or that we weren’t going.  Apparently, one of the guys mother-in-law died and that was the reason, which I understand, but why didn’t anybody tell me.  I put it on the vacation board at work a month ago to make sure I had if off.  I ended up not working anyways but I would have been pissed if I would have gotten some overtime and the passed up on it.

Journal, September 7th

I never even picked up my laptop yesterday which is why you didn’t get a journal post or anything.  I woke up at 9, watched Kickass on TV all morning (we had never seen it) and then went to my brothers for an all day Michigan/Notre Dame festivity.  Basically we just grilled out and hung out together all day.  It was a good day, until the actual game in the evening.  I won’t even go there now, let’s just say Michigan forgot to show up for it.

I had GPS’d (not a word, but that’s how I would have said it) the kids to see where they were (with theEX) and they were at the movies (again, 3rd time in the last 2 weekends) but the theaters are only 10-15 minutes from my brother’s house so I told his daughter to text Samantha.  She ended up calling her after texting for a few and begged theEx to bring her by.  So she did, so Samantha stayed with us last night.

We woke up this morning and needed to do some grocery shopping so we headed over to Wally Hell and hit the McDonalds for breakfast, theEx showed up to get Samantha back, we grocery shopped and now I’m back home for most of the day until I meet theEx again to get the kids back tonight.  We rented some DVD’s from Redbox while we were out so we’ll probably do that for awhile.

9:00 pm

We ended up watching all 3 DVD’s so I took them back on the way to get the kids.  I had to stop and get gas anyways so I turned them in and grabbed Divergent for Samantha who has been begging for it.

What I clicked on to read today.  I read all kinds of things in my Feedly, but these I found in other places or a link in Feedly.

Check out them all – Random Thoughts from a Random Guy, My Sports Obsession, My Sports Obsession Tumblr, My Sports Obsession – Wolverines, My Sports Obsession – Index, A Day in the Life of a Nobody, My Life (private), and Cats Are Cuter.  I also post on Too Many Manninghams.

zzz-lawsmoviereviews

  • Kickass (TV) – We actually liked this movie, it was better than I thought it would be.
  • Mom’s Night Out (Redbox DVD) – It was better than expected.  I figured it would have some funny parts but it was funnier than expected.
  • Draft Day (Redbox DVD) – Great movie if you’re a football fan.  It was pretty insightful, I assume it was fairly accurate as the NFL allowed their logos and such in it.
  • Oculus (Redbox DVD) – This wasn’t to bad.  I never expect much from horror movies so it doesn’t take much for me to say it’s decent.  It was a little tough to follow with all the flashbacks but as long as I paid attention it wasn’t too bad.
